Bruxism is a common, chronic condition that causes you to clinch your jaw and grind your teeth. This most frequently occurs at night, and you may wake up with a sore jaw, headaches, and radiating pain down your neck. The condition is typically associated with stress, although missing teeth and dental misalignment can also cause you to grind your teeth, unconsciously trying to bring them into alignment.

Bruxism Treatment

Custom-made mouth guards are the most common treatment for bruxism. There are two types of oral appliances available, and Dr. Jing or one of his associates will help you select the right type for your needs. Traditional mouth guards fit over your teeth, keeping you from grinding them together. Oral splints realign your jaw, preventing the grinding motion from occurring in the first place. Both types are effective, and you will typically only need to wear your appliance at night.

Though less common, orthodontic care or dental restorations are also viable options for treating bruxism. Traditional braces or Invisalign® can correct malocclusion that may be causing you to grind your teeth. When you are missing teeth, your brain unconsciously tries to realign your dental arch, with each upper tooth touching the one below it. By replacing missing teeth with bridges or implants, your dentist can correct this alignment issue and minimize teeth grinding.

The Benefits of Bruxism Treatment

No matter which option is ultimately the best one for you, bruxism treatment can:

  • Eliminate or minimize jaw discomfort, headaches, and facial pain
  • Reduce your risk for developing TMJ
  • Help to prevent dental erosion, cracked teeth, chips, and other structural damage
  • Enable you to get a more restful night of sleep

Athletic Mouth Guards

In addition to providing mouth guards for the treatment of bruxism, we also provide oral appliances to athletes of all ages. These custom-made devices fit over your teeth and help to prevent tooth loss and dental damage, especially in high-contact sports, like football and hockey. While many athletic stores sell pre-made mouth guards, these devices do not fit as well, and therefore cannot provide the same high level of protection. In addition, some poorly fitting commercial mouth guards can inhibit regular breathing patterns and athletic performance. If you or your child plays a highly physical sport, we recommend that you order a comfortable, reasonably priced athletic mouth guard as soon as possible.
