Once you notice them, they can be hard to ignore or forget, but unfortunately, teeth stains and discoloration are often unavoidable. Because they are so common, and because they can so effectively diminish your smile’s brilliance, teeth stains are a frequent concern for many patients, making teeth-whitening the most popular cosmetic dental enhancement. Before the need arises, however, you can help brighten minor stains and prolong your smile’s youthful appearance with a few natural teeth-whitening tips.
Natural Tips for a Brighter Smile
- Add baking soda to your hygiene routine—It was once the main ingredient in a good dental hygiene routine (among many other household uses), and baking soda still remains a highly effective natural teeth cleaner and brightener. The slightly-abrasive soda crystals can gently scrub your teeth clean while also neutralizing the bacteria that cause bad breath.
- Rinse with water when you can’t brush and floss—Generally, you should brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day, but when possible, you should do so after eating, as well. If you don’t have time to thoroughly clean your teeth after meals, then at least rinse your mouth with water to wash away teeth-staining particles and oral bacteria.
- Save darker foods and beverages for larger meals—Naturally, darker substances have a more potent ability to stain your teeth. If you save dark sauces, dark wines, and other dark foodstuffs for larger meals, the variety of food and beverages can help negate some of their staining effects.
When Teeth-Whitening Is Necessary
The most common teeth stains, like those that are caused by years of exposure to food and drinks, typically appear on the surfaces of your teeth, and as such, can be erased with professional teeth-whitening. If it’s too late to prevent stains with good hygiene, then we can recommend teeth-whitening in our office (which can be completed in a single visit), or at home with a custom-designed whitening kit. The take-home kit includes custom-made trays and a professional-strength bleaching agent, and can brighten your smile significantly in as little as 10-14 days.
