What to Expect: Dental Checkups

toothhappythumbsupYou are probably used to hearing dentists suggest that you schedule twice annual dental checkups. However, that does not necessarily mean you know what to expect. We often find that when patients feel knowledgeable about their upcoming visits, they feel much more enthusiastic and comfortable. Rather than waiting until your appointment to find out more, we encourage you to become a bit more familiar with what to expect during your checkup with the following details:

Visual Exam

We will take a look inside of your mouth. In some cases, this is the easiest way to detect changes and to monitor your health. For instance, it is quite easy to detect a broken tooth with our eyes alone – we can then move forward with further investigation regarding what is happening with your oral health.

Oral Cancer Screening

We will screen you during your dental checkups for oral cancer. The good news is that by detecting this concern early – as early as its pre-cancerous stage – we can provide you with treatment right away. The sooner we offer treatment, the greater the success rate.

Advanced Imaging

We cannot see everything going on in your mouth or your surrounding supportive structures with our eyes alone. To take a closer, more precise look, we will rely on the use of advanced imaging during your dental checkup. The dental technology we use typically includes intraoral cameras and digital X-rays. An intraoral camera will take high-resolution snapshots of your mouth’s interior, so you can see what we see when examine you. We will also take digital X-rays, a way to see deeper into the inner workings of your mouth without relying on conventional X-rays. The digital option requires quick, comfortable imaging, emits much lower amounts of radiation, and is uploaded almost instantly into our computer system.
