Smile for Career Success, Says North Houston Dentist

Smiling at work GlassesAccording to Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) men go to the dentist less than women. This is due to reasons such as fear, embarrassment, not enough time, and simple pride. Since many men are motivated by career success, they might think twice about neglecting the dentist if they realized that a healthy, confident smile can translate into doing well in the work place. Fort Worth dentist, Dr. Bob Jing, will talk more about the importance of nice smiles on the job.

Getting the Job

Years ago, careers were different. Most people worked for one or two employers in their lifetime and they weren’t as concerned with personal appearance as a sign of success. Society has changed. People are more concerned with looks, and switching jobs every few years has become very common. Jobs are also scarce in the recent economy, and this leads to increased competition, especially for middle-aged men. For this reason, teeth whitening and other cosmetic procedures, as well as orthodontic treatment are increasingly popular, as they might give an edge when trying to land a job or promotion.

Getting the Promotion

People who are in sales or customer service (any job where their duties consist primarily of phone time) are often instructed to smile while they’re talking to customers. Why? Sometimes referred to as the “smile and dial” approach, a broad smile can actually make a difference in the experience of the customer. Smiling can actually change the way your voice sounds, making it lighter and happier, which will then alter how the person on the other end of the phone feels about talking to you. Try smiling and talking on the phone at some point after reading this, and see if you pick up a change in how you sound.

Invisalign Has Many Advantages

Smile Girl LibraryAre you prepared for 2014 to come to a close? Are you feeling confident about all of the holidays coming up? Or will you be avoiding family pictures once again because of your lack of confidence in your smile? If you have a strong desire to straighten your teeth in the quickest and most incognito possible way, you could get started before 2015 is here. Fort Worth dentist, Dr. Bob Jing is happy to help patients out with Invisalign. Here are five reasons why this innovative and fast orthodontic alignment technique can help make this the last year of feeling embarrassed about your teeth.

Five Reasons to Consider Invisalign

1. Looking Good – When you become an Invisalign patient you’ll be sporting a new grin in roughly a year’s time. You will find many more reasons to smile when you suddenly feel comfortable in your social life, and perhaps even your romantic life. Straighter teeth can also lead to a greater rate of career success.

2. Clean and Healthy Smile: Crooked and overlapping teeth can be difficult to brush and floss. Bacteria can harbor in places that are completely unreachable, and cause decay that’s difficult to see and treat. Once you have orthodontic treatment and acquire even spacing, you will be able to ensure that your teeth are sparkling clean with a normal hygiene routine.

3. Say Adios to Bad Breath: Thanks to easier dental hygiene you’ll have be able to implement with your straight and evenly spaced teeth, you’re likely to have fresher breath. Most bad breath issues are caused by oral bacteria, so proper brushing and flossing will make you much more kissable.

4. Go Incognito: Invisalign utilizes clear alignment trays so that brackets and wires will not be a concern. You can straighten your teeth while maintaining a relatively normal appearance without a glaringly tin grin.

5. Finished in a Flash: Patients usually have a brand new and beautiful smile within a year of beginning treatment. The sooner you begin, the sooner you’ll be done, so don’t hesitate to consult with our dental team.

Teeth Grinding from High Stress

Tooth Grinding PainStress can evoke different reactions in different people. Some stress manifestations are obvious and conscious, and some occur unconsciously, even when we’re sleeping and completely unaware. You probably know that you’re biting fingernails, chewing on pencils, or snapping at every person who comes into your path.  However, a stress side effect that is extremely detrimental to your dental health, that you may have no idea you have, is bruxism. The clinical term bruxism is synonymous with teeth grinding. As you grind away every night in your dreams, instead of relieving stress, you’re actually creating potential tooth damage.

Avoiding the Nightly Grind

Bruxism sufferers might have no symptoms. If any tell-tale signs are clear, they would include: general mouth discomfort, toothaches, and unexplained cracked teeth. Chronic teeth grinders can even start to have other symptoms like headaches, neck pain, earaches, and jaw discomfort. Bruxism can lead into temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research released information that between 5% and 12% of people suffer from TMD. Dentists are seeing more bruxism and TMD patients as stress levels heighten in our fast-paced society.

Reducing Bruxism by Reducing Stress

If you do happen to grind your teeth on a regular basis, many people find that participating in stress-relieving activities can help relax you enough that bruxism is quelled, and your tooth enamel is saved from damage.  Yoga, regular massages, morning meditation, stress balls, journal writing, a warm bath, doing a puzzle, reading quietly, listening to classical music, or any activity that might put your mind at ease and relax your body can potentially reduce your teeth grinding issues. When all else fails, visit our dental team for bruxism treatment options.

Understanding the Basics of Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain VeneersOnce upon a time, porcelain veneers were adhered to teeth through the use of the same substance that would temporarily secure dentures in place. This meant that veneers would similar to false eyelashes – something you could put on for a few hours when you had a special occasion, but not something you could expect to adorn your smile for years on end. Luckily, the technology has come a long way, and porcelain dental veneers are now one of the most popular long term ways to makeover a flawed smile.

The Importance of a Nice Smile

Smiles do more than just help you snag a date, or make a nice picture. Every day, we smile, and it bridges gaps and gives off impressions. People who are uncomfortable or self-conscious due to a large amount of necessary dental work are likely to avoid smiling. Have you ever seen someone cover their mouth to avoid you seeing their teeth, or attempt to smile with their lips closed? Simply making that first phone call to consult with our team at 7 Day Dental Center can set you down the path of being able to beam brightly rather than hiding you’re your grin.

Porcelain Veneers Explained

There are several types of materials that can be used for dental veneers. Porcelain is generally the basis for these wafer thin shells that are custom made to your measurements. Once adhered to your teeth, the material can be shaped by Dr. Jing in order to cover up any flaws on your most visible teeth. A cosmetic procedure such as porcelain veneers can be finished within two or three visits. Provided you have a healthy foundation with your teeth and gums, your porcelain veneers can be maintained as long as 20 years.

Dating Do’s and Don’ts for Bad Breath Issues

Bad BreathIf you have a hot date this weekend, there are many things to feel concerned about. What will you wear? Where should you go? Should you offer to pay? Should you go “dutch?” Will there be a goodnight kiss? If so, you might want to think about how your breath smells so you make the right impression. There are some definite dating do’s and don’ts if you want to avoid bad breath.

Do Brush and Floss your Teeth Before you Go Out

Okay, maybe this is obvious before any social interaction, but you may feel nervous and have a lot on your mind while getting ready for your big night out with someone you like. As your showering, shaving, or doing whatever it is you do to prepare, don’t forget to floss, brush, and rinse with an antibacterial
mouthwash. This will ensure that you’ll be off to a good start when you come face-to-face with the object of your affection.

Don’t Order the Liver and Onions

Or the garlic bread, or a cup of coffee with dessert, or anything that will remain on your breath long after you’ve finished consuming it. Certain foods and beverages taint your breath with foul odors for a temporary time, while your body digests.

Do Carry a Pack of Sugarless Gum

Chances are, if you’re worried about your breath, than your date is in the same boat thinking about the impression they are making. Offer them a piece of minty, sugar-free gum with xylitol, and take a piece for yourself. Xylitol traps bacteria and suffocates it, so some offensive odors will be obliterated. Gum also picks up food debris which is hanging around in your mouth, so you will feel clean, fresh, and ready to smooch.

Trails and Treats at the Fort Worth Nature Center

halloween

Halloween is just a few weeks away. Kids everywhere are gearing up for a night of fun costumes and sugary treats. If you’re looking for a unique way to celebrate Halloween with your family, why not stop by the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge? On October 30th, the Nature Center will be hosting their annual Trails and Treats celebration. Dr. Bob Jing offers a few details about this family-friendly celebration.

Fun for the Entire Family

The Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge consists of over 3,600 acres of pristine Texas wilderness, with miles of hiking trails, educational opportunities, and a chance to enjoy unspoiled, natural tranquility. The Nature Center also strives to provide fun activities for the Fort Worth community, especially around the holidays. For Halloween, they’re offering a free event for the children. On October 30th, from 5pm to 7pm, your child can dress in his/her favorite costume and enjoy the chance to trick or treat for games, candy, crafts and more. The Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge is located at 9601 Fossil Ridge Road, Fort Worth, TX 76135.

Checkups and Cleanings

While the occasional sugary treat is okay, too much of a good thing can quickly lead to dental health complications. Children often develop tooth decay as a result of candy or sodas. To combat this issue, we recommend thorough and proper dental habits. Each day, your little one should brush his/her teeth twice and floss once. Your child may need your help to ensure correct brushing and flossing.

Just as important are routine checkups and dental cleanings. Your children should undergo an exam and dental cleaning at least once every six months. Call us today to schedule a visit!

Teeth Whitening Depends on the Type of Stains

Teeth WhiteningHave you ever considered teeth whitening? Or perhaps you have already had your teeth bleached, and loved the results. Or hated them. Much depends on the quality of bleaching agents, the means of administering the whitening to your smile, and the health of your teeth. That’s why best results are almost always found when you turn to a professional. Fort Worth dentist, Dr. Bob Jing offers two types of whitening – in office bleaching and at home kits – as well as other solutions for different types of smile stains.

What Type of Stains Do you Have?

Your decisions regarding brightening your smile should hinge on whether or not your stains are extrinsic or intrinsic. Here is a brief rundown on the two:

Extrinsic stains settle on the surfaces of your teeth. Because they lie outside of the tooth enamel, these stains are fairly easy to remove with traditional bleaching methods. Extrinsic stains most commonly come from lifestyle habits such as regular consumption of beverages which are dark in color (think coffee, red wine, and berry juices). You can also get these stains from tobacco use. Some staining will be alleviated by good brushing and flossing habits and six month cleanings. However, if the stains buildup or come on with age, professional teeth whitening can yield up to ten shades of brightness, making you look younger and more vibrant when you flash a beautiful, beaming grin.

Intrinsic stains will not respond to whitening because they come from internal parts of the tooth. Generally, inner stains are caused by certain medications (particularly tetracycline) or traumatic dental injuries. Fluorosis (from ingesting an abundance of fluoride at a young age) can also lead to this type of stain. If you do have intrinsic teeth stains, save your money on teeth whitening and consult with our dental team about treatments such as dental bonding, crowns, or porcelain veneers to cover up the discoloration.

Preventive Dental Care Seven Days a Week

Happy FamilyYour teeth don’t know the difference between Sunday and Wednesday. With an increasingly busier lifestyle in the United States, many people simply aren’t able to take the time off during the week to make it to an afternoon dental appointment. That’s why Dr. Bob Jing and the rest of our dental team at 7 Day Dental Care have made the choice to have our office open to patients every single day of the week. If you have a toothache on Saturday, lose a filling on Sunday, or you simply want to schedule your preventive checkup for the weekend, we’ll be here for you.

Checkup Basics

Dental checkups are designed for maintenance and prevention. Between your hygienist and dentist, a full array of examination methods and cleaning will ensure that your teeth, gums, and jaw are at optimal health. Some of the issues we will look for include:

  • Cavities
  • Enamel Erosion
  • Periodontal (Gum) disease
  • Root infection
  • Tooth cracks/chips/breaks
  • Misalignment
  • Signs of teeth grinding
  • Oral Cancer

Oral Cancer Screenings

Screening for oral cancer at each and every one of your six month dental checkups makes good sense. The signs of oral cancer can be a bit innocuous at first. It would be easy for you to shrug off a lesion or bump as a small canker sore or area of temporary irritation. However, our dental team is trained to find red spots, white patches, or areas of bleeding which look suspicious. If we are concerned, try to breathe easy. We err on the side of caution, and more often than not, it’s nothing. However, if Dr. Jing or another member of the team diagnoses oral/pharyngeal cancer as early as possible, your chances of a speedy and full recovery will be much greater.
