Custom Mouthguards for Bruxism
Bruxism, or chronic teeth-grinding, is a common condition that can lead to a variety of related dental concerns. For many patients with bruxism, the act of grinding their teeth occurs most often at night. Because it can take a while to realize this is happening, the condition can often cause significant tooth wear and damage by the time it’s treated. The good news: your dentist can spot early signs of bruxism during your routine dental exam and prescribe a custom-designed mouthguard to protect your teeth from grinding.
What Is Bruxism?
Grinding your teeth may be a nervous tic or a sign of being stressed. When it only occurs once in a while or under very specific circumstances, your teeth-grinding probably isn’t bruxism. Bruxism describes grinding your teeth excessively, often unconsciously, and is frequently caused by underlying issues with bite alignment and function. When left untreated, it can cause your teeth to wear down, develop cracks, move out of alignment, or more. Therefore, treating bruxism can often include restoring the tooth structure that has already been compromised.
Treating Bruxism
In many cases, bruxism can be successfully treated with a mouthguard that your dentist can design specifically to fit your teeth. The mouthguard is similar to an athletic mouthguard, but smaller and more comfortable. Instead of protecting your teeth from accidental impact, the appliance will stop your teeth from grinding together while providing comfortable support for your jaw joints and muscles.
